Hull's creepiest ghost stories with tales of murder, phantoms and violent poltergeis
A look back at Hull's most haunted houses. Linnaeus Street where Hull's original haunted house sat
It started on Friday October 22, 1852 at the home in what is now Linnaeus Street, off Anlaby Road. A family were rudely awoken by a loud banging noise, like a “tap, tap, tap.” Candles were lit, and by the flickering flame the family investigated, but the cause of the noise went undiscovered.

Eventually, they sought the help and advice of the Hull Police, who quickly dispatched two detectives to the house. By this point, however, the news had broken, and newspapers across Great Britain began to feature the story of Hull’s most haunted house.

The public arrived en masse to sit in the street and await the spectral tapping, and when it began the scientists, builders, and detectives searched the house for a possible explanation but none was forthcoming. The house lacked gas or water pipes, so these were ruled out, and the nearest watercourse was a well at the bottom of the garden.

The Pennington Street poltergeist
Pennington Street is today filled with industrial units and workshops, but in 1854 it was a bustling community, with terraced properties that housed the workers of east Hull.

It was among one of these houses that the Gard family resided. But their lives were thrown into chaos by the arrival of a poltergeist.

The bizarre goings on had become so bad the police had been called in when stones were thrown at people inside the house. At one point, when the police were present, a stone flew across the room and hit one of the children.

On another occasion, when the house was empty, a piece of coal flew through the kitchen window into the rear garden, narrowly missing a police officer and Mr Gard.
