Full Wolf Moon eclipse on January 10
In North America, we sometimes use the name Wolf Moon for the January full moon. Other full moon names for January include the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. These next few nights – January 9 and 10, 2020 – watch for the full-looking moon, our nocturnal sun, to light up the nighttime from dusk until dawn. And if you live in the world’s Eastern Hemisphere, you might – or might not – detect Earth’s faint penumbral shadow on the full moon’s face on the night of January 10-11.

We in the Americas will miss this eclipse. See the worldwide map below.

Wolf moon eclipse kicks off the first of 13 full moons in 2020

(CNN)This year started off with a meteor shower and the first month of 2020 continues with a penumbral lunar eclipse during the full moon, on Friday.

Lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon. But a penumbral lunar eclipse is different from a total lunar eclipse.
The eclipse on Friday will occur when the moon moves into Earth's penumbra, or outer shadow. This causes the moon to look darker than normal.
During a total lunar eclipse, the change is more dramatic because the entire moon appears to be a deep red color.
The eclipse will last for about four hours.
The penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible on Friday evening to those in Asia, Australia, Europe and Africa.
Those in North America will have a more difficult time seeing it because it begins at 12:06 p.m. ET and ends at 4:14 p.m. ET. But those in Alaska, eastern Maine and parts of northern and eastern Canada have a chance.
Check Time and Date to see the best time for your area.
Each moon has its own name associated with the full moon. In January, it's known as the "wolf moon," inspired by hungry wolves that howled outside of villages long ago, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Wolf moon: Full moon and lunar eclipse delight skywatchers

Skywatchers have been treated to the first full moon of 2020 - known as a "wolf moon" - at the same time as a lunar eclipse.

Those gazing up at the skies on Friday, weather permitting, would have seen a penumbral lunar eclipse, which happens when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

The phenomenon, which began at 17:00 GMT in the UK and ended at around 21:00, saw the moon move into Earth's penumbra, or outer shadow, causing it to look darker than normal.
