Blood moon 2018 in London: Astronomer reveals best spots to catch lunar eclipse
A leading fellow at a London university today tells of his excitement ahead of Friday’s “blood moon” lunar eclipse as he reveals the best places to see it in London.

Dr Francisco Diego, senior teaching fellow at University College London’s (UCL) physics and astronomy department, says this particular eclipse will be "spectacular" as it lasts much longer than normal.

Dr Diego said: “The lunar eclipse happens more or less every six months but Friday’s will be much longer than usual as the moon will stay in the shadow of the earth much longer.”

Blood moon eclipse 2018: what, when and how to see it

The super blue blood moon? So January. This month, it’s all about the blood moon eclipse: the longest lunar eclipse of the century, lasting one hour and 43 minutes. For some Doomsday enthusiasts it’s supposed to mark the end of the world, but for most Londoners it’s just – in the immortal words of Toploader – a fine and natural sight. Here’s everything you need to know about the July 2018 blood moon.

Bloody lunar eclipse prompts end-is-nigh prophecies – here’s all you need to know

The longest –and creepiest– lunar eclipse of the century will take place Friday and Saturday, prompting renewed fear among those who think that this weekend’s blood moon spells the end of days.
What is a blood moon?
The lunar eclipse will see the Moon turn a red shade, thanks to the Earth passing between the Sun and the Moon, which makes some of the solar light bounce around the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere. The red and orange wavelengths scatter more than blue and violent ones, making the moon look ‘bloody’.

This eclipse will last one hour and 43 minutes, and the Moon will be in the Earth’s shadow for four hours altogether.

"Blood moon" eclipse, Mars pairing up for astronomical spectacle

The longest "blood moon" eclipse in this century will coincide with Mars' closest approach to Earth in 15 years to offer skygazers a thrilling astronomical double bill on Friday, astronomers say. For about half the world, the moon will be partly or fully in Earth's shadow from 1:14 p.m. to 7:28 p.m. ET — six hours and 14 minutes in all.

The period of complete eclipse — known as "totality," when the moon appears darkest — will last from 3:30 p.m. to 5:13 p.m. ET. "Totality will last for 103 minutes, making it the longest eclipse of the 21st century!" said the Royal Astronomical Society in London.

At the same time, Mars will hover near the moon in the night sky, easily visible with the naked eye. Our neighboring planet will appear unusually large and bright, a mere 35.9 million miles from Earth on its elliptical orbit around the sun.

Photos: The longest lunar eclipse of the century captured around the world

Skywatchers from around the globe observed the longest total lunar eclipse of the century as the moon turned blood red on Friday night.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth’s innermost shadow. When this happens, the moon turns rusty orange or deep red in color and is how it earned the nickname of a blood moon eclipse.

The total phase of the eclipse lasted for one hour and 43 minutes, while the entire eclipse, including the partial phases, lasted for over six hours.

One reason why this eclipse is lasted so long is because it occurred when the moon is near apogee, or the point in its orbit when it is farthest away from the Earth, making it appear smaller than normal.
