. Women, Sex and Spiritualism
Lecture – Matt Wingett
From its 19th-century beginnings in Hydesville New York, modern Spiritualism was primarily a woman-centred religion. Matt Wingett traces the views of the church and scientists towards Spiritualist women. Religious critics called them witches, and accused them of meddling with demonic forces. The scientific community, which was mostly male, focussed on the what was happening the the women’s bodies when they were in seances: the investigators pried under the petticoats and tied them up with manacles. Sometimes it went so far as molestation, so what was going on in the name of ‘serious work’? This talk looks at what the Spiritualism provoked and revealed about Victorian and Edwardian society’s fears about women. Join us for a night of tales of ectoplasm, apports, blown-out candles, hand cuffs, ouija boards, and sexual repressions.

Matt Wingett is a local historian and publisher, author of the recent study of Conan Doyle’s spiritualism Conan Doyle and the Mysterious World of Light. A compelling speaker, he lectured at Treadwell’s last year and returns by popular demand.

Time: Please arrive 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm start. Drinks soiree follows the lecture.
